I just watched Total Finale Live, the final show of TRL. That show was SOOO BIG I just had to blog about it.
While I was watching the show, I had flashbacks of all my TRL memories. The first time I watched TRL was in 2003. I was in Primary 4 at that time. That was when my taste in TV changed. I switched from cartoons to grown-up shows. There was a time when I watched TRL every single night. I didn't go out much. I mean, geez, I was 9. It was the only thing I looked forward to everyday. One of the 1st songs I heard on TRL which became my earworm was "Hey Ya!" by Outkast. I actually learned the term "earworm" from TRL. Suchin Pak said it. Fun & educational. What more could you want, ae?
I remember going on vacation to the Philippines that year & the only thing I missed about Brunei was being able to watch TRL every night.
I literally grew up with the show. It represented good, clean fun. Teenagers who knew how to have fun yet had their moral values in check. It also transcended all boundaries. Age, politics, culture...... Everything. They had a slew of amazing multi-ethnic VJs who never failed to entertain. My favourites were Vanessa Minnillo, Susie Castillo, Hilarie Burton, Quddus, Lala, Lindsey Rodriguez - the last VJ to be added to the show, and of course, the extraordinary super-VJs - Carson Daly & Damien Fahey.
But who can forget the equally entertaining news reporters? Rob Norris, Suchin Pak, Swag, Kim Stoltz & Tim Kash. They gave up-to-date news. Be it serious, sad, happy or just downright crazy. They ALL delivered.
Who was the most popular artist featured on TRL? It was a tough one, but they settled on Britney Spears. And I couldn't agree more. She was given the title of "Queen of TRL". She emerged at the same time as TRL & her songs have contributed so much to pop culture as well. Britney Spears & TRL are an irreplaceable combo.
TRL has become such an intrical part of pop culture. I will never forget that show. It has given me memories to last a lifetime. I was heartbroken to hear that it was coming to an end, but as always, all good things come to an end. Its ending was a bittersweet one. I am both sad and glad to say that this is the End of An Era. A chapter in pop culture & my life has ended.
